Common Lizard (Zootoca vivipara)
We have several common lizards, Zootoca vivipara, of varying ages including Hurtwood, Witley, Tansy and Hops. Common lizards are widespread throughout Britain as well as much of Europe and North Asia, living further North than any other land dwelling reptile due to their ability to enter a super cooled state in which their bodies can tolerate being frozen! They have varying colours and patterns, usually consisting of browns and greens with spots, stripes or they can even be patternless.
Despite being such a widespread and adaptable species, unfortunately they are currently in decline and are listed as a UK BAP species, meaning their decline is of enough concern that they are now a priority of conservation efforts. Our common lizards are all captive bred individuals, from responsible breeders keeping them in naturalistic outdoor enclosures. They are very charismatic creatures and always busy doing something! They live in a mixed species outdoor enclosure, meaning they have access to natural British weather which is perfect for them to thrive. They have a varied diet of invertebrates. Our lizards are regularly but carefully handled and often hand fed to ensure they are comfortable with human interaction. |
