Yellow-Tailed Scorpion (Tetratrichobothrius flavicaudis)
Snappy is our adult female yellow-tailed scorpion, (Tetratrichobothrius flavicaudis). Although they are not native to Britain, there is a large introduced colony of about 10,000-15,000 strong living in a south facing wall of Sheerness Docks that has been present for around 200 years!
It is thought that yellow-tailed scorpions arrived to the Kent coast on shipments during the 19th century having travelled from their natural area in Southern Europe. They are occasionally sighted elsewhere along the British coast, however the only longterm successful colony is in Sheerness where it is also considered the most northerly colony of scorpions in the world. Snappy is our adult female yellow-tailed scorpion from a captive breeder here in the UK. She lives in a secure indoor enclosure and is fed on a diet of invertebrates. |
